Time again to look at a handful of guys who are treating Class A like their own personal country club. Bo Greenwell and Jeremie Tice are in “see ball, hit ball” mode right now. The teammates, who both play for the Lake County Captains, are both hitting over .400 so far this season. Together, they’ve driven in 31 runs, which is roughly 40% of the entire team’s production. Semi-congratulations to Clinton Lumberking Anthony Vasquez, who...

I’ll be taking a weekly look at the top performers in Class A ball, and today seems like as good a day as any. The Netherlands has not been a traditional baseball hotbed. Sure, we’ve had our share here and there – who could forget Sir Sidney Ponson? But there’s one Dutchman in particular who is burning up the Midwest league right now. Check out his line: AVG .409, 4 R, 3 HR, 8...

Meet the Midwest League; Revised

While we’re sure you’ve grown to love and cherish our higgledy-piggledy random posting style, this year we got together and decided to present minor-league baseball with a certain regard for structure. That means each guy got a classification or two to focus on throughout the season. That’s in addition to whatever higgledy-piggledy stuff each of us does, because we value our freedom. My focus will be on Low-A and Short-Season A ball. For starters,...

You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello

I’ve learned a lot about minor league baseball this season, but the most interesting might be something I just discovered about ten minutes ago: major league teams and their minor league affiliates are like the characters on Friends* – sooner or later, they all end up dating one another. *Yeah, Friends.  My pop culture references are so timely.  The backup example was Beverly Hills 90210. Almost immediately after the season ended, what I’m assuming...

GAC! (Part 2)

A couple days ago, I noticed that Clinton’s Ian Gac was leading the Midwest League in batting average (still is), homeruns and runs batted in, and wondered out loud if any player has ever won that league’s Triple Crown.  An article on MiLB.com talked about Moe Hill, who was the first to take all three titles in 1974, and another source mentioned Joey Meyer in 1984, but I wasn’t sure if those were correct, or...

GAC!

Extra P put Ian Gac and his nine homeruns on the Z-Meter last week, but the pressure was apparently too much and Gac-Man immediately stopped hitting the ball out of the park.  Until tonight. Gac homered twice and drove in six runs, adding to his league-leading totals in both categories (11 and 32, respectively).  His 32 RBI are second-best in all of minor league baseball, trailing only Jesus Guzman of AA Midland.  The game...
