Arizona Fall League Rosters Announced

August 28, 2009
By

Okay, so they were announced Tuesday.  Timeliness has never been one of my strong suits. More information about the AFL can be found in this column from Examiner.com and the Winter Leagues page at MLB.com.  I’ve taken the liberty of listing some of the key players for each team, their ages, and the levels at which they played in 2009: Phoenix Desert Dogs Brandon Erbe, RHP, 21 (A-/AA) Drew Storen, RHP, 22 (A/A+/AA) Stephen...

From MLB Draft Pick to NCAA Champion?

From MLB Draft Pick to NCAA Champion?

I know, I’m like you. That sounds totally backward to me. In the course of doing research for an upcoming college basketball project, I looked into the much-vaunted Henry brothers, both of whom were set to play for the Memphis Tigers this season before coach John Calipari bolted for Kentucky. Instead, the brothers opted to switch their allegiance to the University of Kansas, which happens to be my alma mama, and that of Henry...

This Week in Bobbleheads – Week 21

August 24, 2009
By

Nice week for me, Melancon bobblehead on Wednesday in Trenton, Lowrie bobblehead in Wilmington on Friday, capped off by having Melancon sign the afformentioned giveaway for me last night in front of his mom and fiancee during my Scranton roadtrip. Pretty amazing I must say. Here’s week 21: San Francisco Giants 8/25/09 Carlos Santana – Santana the popular hispanic musician is being given as part of a Latino night promotion, complete with guitar. New...

The No-Hitters Keep Coming

August 23, 2009
By

August has been a good month for minor league no-hitters – there have been approximately 412 so far (that might be a slight exaggeration), with three more added to the list on Saturday. In the Arizona League, three Athletics pitchers combined to hold the Angels hitless – payback, perhaps, for August 14, when the Angels did the same to the A’s.  There was only one problem: the Angels won both games. Hector Garcia started...

Your Random Rasmus Brothers Update

August 23, 2009
By

Because I wait excitedly for the Rasmus Brothers to perform on the same day, I assume that you do too. Here are the results from yesterday: Colby: 1-4, HR, BB Cory: 2.2 IP, 3 R, 5 H, 4 BB, 3 SO Colby’s hit wasn’t a walk-off this time, but he “wins” this round because Cory had a bad day. The fourteen inning no-hit streak? Gone in the first inning. Both brothers’ teams eventually won,...

Another No-Hitter From Last Night

August 19, 2009
By

Usually, I check minor league box scores at night to see if anything interesting is going on – no-hitters, multi-homerun games, and anything else that catches my eye.  Whatever I miss (the California League usually runs late, for example, so I often don’t see the final scores before heading to bed), I try to look at when I get home from work the next day. I was so focused on the no-hitters by Jhoulys...

Circle August 21 On Your Calendars: Round 3 In The Battle Of The Rasmus Brothers

August 17, 2009
By

Five days ago, I brought you the story of the Brothers Rasmus: older brother Colby, one of Baseball America’s Top 100 preseason prospects and an outfielder for the St. Louis Cardinals, celebrated his birthday, only to be upstaged by little brother Cory, who pitched a seven-inning no-hitter for the Danville Braves. Tonight was to be the night Colby got his revenge. The rookie broke a 5-5 ninth inning tie with his twelfth homerun of...

This Week in Bobbleheads – Week 20

August 16, 2009
By

Well the Happ bobblehead giveaway I went to was a mob scene. They even had to open up early since the line at the one gate was all the way into the parking lot causing a big problem with people that expected to have the gates open at 6pm, not 5:45 like they did. Unfortunately management didn’t care much, but also didn’t mention to the fans that only half were given at the fans...

Minor League Bats Are Feeling The Effects Of The Dog Days Of Summer

August 16, 2009
By

On Friday, minor league baseball saw three no-hitters and a one-hitter among the 100+ games on the daily schedule.  The pitching dominance continued into Saturday – “only” one no-hitter, but at least three one-hitters and several games in which starters pitched extremely well before the bullpen imploded just enough to knock it down a notch or two on the Awesome Game Scale. Milciades Santana, DSL Blue Jays: 7 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0...

One No-Hitter, Two No-Hitter, Three No-Hitter, Fo–No, Never Mind, Just Three

August 15, 2009
By

Friday was a wild day for pitching in the minors, with three no-hitters on the schedule. The first no-no came in the Arizona League, a combined job by three members of the Angels staff.  Jose Perez started and was dominant for five innings, striking out nine and walking one.  Joshua Blanco came on for three innings and walked two more batters before C.J. Bressoud closed it out with a perfect ninth. At 24, I...
