Giants Win Dominican Summer League Championship

August 31, 2009
By

Earlier today, the DSL Giants beat the DSL Twins, 2-1, to finish off a three game sweep in the Dominican Summer League championship series. All three games were tightly contested, low-scoring affairs – 4-3, 3-1, 2-1.  In the first, the Giants came from behind to win in extra innings; in the final two, they scored in the eighth inning to break a 1-1 tie. If the box scores are to be believed, all three...

Dominican Summer League Finals Are Underway

August 30, 2009

The DSL Giants defeated the DSL Twins last night, 4-3, to take a one game to none lead in the best-of-five championship series. The Giants held a 2-0 lead until the Twins’ Yancarlo Franco tied it with a two-run homerun in the top of the seventh.  The visitors took the lead the following inning when Romy Trinidad reached on a fielder’s choice, advanced to third on two consecutive wild pitches, and scored on a...

Another No-Hitter From Last Night

August 19, 2009
By

Usually, I check minor league box scores at night to see if anything interesting is going on – no-hitters, multi-homerun games, and anything else that catches my eye.  Whatever I miss (the California League usually runs late, for example, so I often don’t see the final scores before heading to bed), I try to look at when I get home from work the next day. I was so focused on the no-hitters by Jhoulys...

Minor League Bats Are Feeling The Effects Of The Dog Days Of Summer

August 16, 2009
By

On Friday, minor league baseball saw three no-hitters and a one-hitter among the 100+ games on the daily schedule.  The pitching dominance continued into Saturday – “only” one no-hitter, but at least three one-hitters and several games in which starters pitched extremely well before the bullpen imploded just enough to knock it down a notch or two on the Awesome Game Scale. Milciades Santana, DSL Blue Jays: 7 IP, 0 R, 1 H, 0...

Gerson No-Hits DSL Cubs, Strikes Out Eleven

August 11, 2009
By

Starlin Gerson has pitched some pretty good games for the Dominican Summer League Reds this season, including an eighteen day stretch in late June and early July where he allowed ten hits in 21.1 innings while striking out 28. As good as that run was, he managed to outdo it on Monday, completely shutting down the DSL Cubs with a complete game, nine-inning no-hitter. Only three batters reached base against the 20-year-old righty (one...

Minor League MVP Candidates, League-By-League

August 11, 2009
By

Just for the heck of it, I decided tonight to look at the stats for every league in the minors and see if I could come up with a candidate or two (no more than three) for the Most Valuable Player award.  (I’ll try to do the same for pitchers later this week.) Some of these are no-brainers (*cough*Chris CarterTexasLeague*cough*), but most had at least a couple guys that should find themselves in the...

How Do You Score Seventeen Runs On Just Six Hits?

August 1, 2009
By

You benefit from thirteen walks and four errors by your opponents, that’s how. The DSL Tigers managed this last night. It’s late (early?) so I really have nothing to add, but I will leave you with the inning-by-inning recap of the carnage. 1st * Nelson Pierre reaches on fielding error by shortstop Jairo Gomez. * With Javier Azcona batting, Nelson Pierre steals (22) 2nd base. * Javier Azcona walks. * Steven Moya hit by...

If Felix Cespedes Didn’t Have Bad Luck, He’d Have No Luck At All

Driving home from work this afternoon, I caught the tail end of Mark Buehrle’s interview on Jim Rome’s radio show. Rome mentioned that following Buehrle’s 2007 no-hitter, the pitcher had given his teammates watches as a reward for their part in the career highlighting event. The next question, of course, dealt with DeWayne Wise, maker of the history-saving ninth inning catch, and what Buehrle could possibly do to show his gratitude (Rome suggested a...
