Now Batting, For The Atlanta Braves…

As I read through the comments of a post on The Big Lead late this afternoon, three in a row caught my eye: Jason Heyward CRUSHED BY HEYWARD Oh boy. That’s gonna be a big deal. Heyward may be in The Show, but his preseason top prospect status means we are obligated to follow him at a careful distance for…well, for as long as we like. Those comments told me he had done something...

Now Batting For The San Francisco Giants…

Actually, “Now Batting For” might not be the best description for Buster Posey’s next few weeks with the Giants.  “Now Coming In As A Defensive Replacement And Occasionally Starting If Bengie Molina Can’t Play” is probably a more apt, though much wordier, option. Posey was called up on Wednesday, capping off a remarkable season that started in the Class A Advanced California League and saw a promotion to Triple-A Fresno.  The 22-year-old catcher out...

Now Pitching For The Cleveland Indians…

August 31, 2009

The Indians are planning to call up top prospect Carlos Carrasco, obtained from the Phillies in a trade deadline deal for Cy Young Award winner Cliff Lee, to make his major league debut on Tuesday: It’s no surprise that the Indians, who have taken major heat from their fan base for dealing Lee and catcher Victor Martinez before the deadline, are anxious to show off some of the talent they got back. Marson will also join the Indians, and chances...

Now Batting For The Baltimore Orioles…

August 5, 2009

Remember what I said before, when the Orioles called up Chris Tillman to make his major league debut?  I’m gonna go ahead and stand by those thoughts, because Brian Matusz has arrived. Baltimore’s first round pick in the 2008 draft, Matusz  ate up the bus leagues this season.  He started out with the Frederick Keys in the Carolina League before a 4-2 record, 2.16 ERA, and 75 strikeouts in 66.2 innings convinced somebody that...

Now Batting For The Chicago White Sox…

White Sox prospect Gordon Beckham made his highly anticipated major league debut on Thursday, going 0-for-3 with a strikeout in Chicago’s 7-0 loss to the Oakland A’s.  He was also 0-for-3 in his second game, a 6-0 loss to Cleveland on Friday.  Two games, no hits in six at-bats, his team has been outscored 13-0.  Clearly the Gordon Beckham Era in Chicago is destined to be a failure. Okay, so I’m clearly kidding.  Beckham,...

Now Batting For The Pittsburgh Pirates…

June 4, 2009

Andrew McCutchen was called up to the major leagues yesterday by the Pirates to replace the freshly traded Nate McLouth, in a case of a team trading its best player and replacing him with its best prospect. McLouth’s debut in Atlanta isn’t underway yet, but McCutchen got his first start for the Bucs today, leading off and playing centerfield.  In his first at-bat, he singled and scored the first run of the game.  His...

Now Batting For The New York Mets…

May 27, 2009
By

On June 25, I am driving down to New York with my brother and my friends Chris and Billy to see the Mets and Cardinals play at Citi Field. The weekly countdown in my planner should be more than enough to convey how much I’m looking forward to the trip (which will also include stops in Baltimore, Pittsburgh, and Cooperstown; I might be filing daily dispatches from the road). This is assuming, however, that...

Now Batting For The Milwaukee Brewers…

May 18, 2009

Former Brewers prospect Matt LaPorta was recently called up by his current team, the Cleveland Indians, which meant that it was only a matter of time before Milwaukee dug deep and recalled their remaining Wonder Mat(t).  Because if one WM is in the majors, the other one must be there as well.  Don’t ask me to explain why.  It’s science. As noted by Extra P in the Z-Meter, Mat Gamel was promoted from AAA...

Now Batting For The Cleveland Indians…

Highly touted prospect Matt LaPorta was called up by the Indians on Friday.  He made his major league debut on Sunday, batting eighth and playing rightfield in Cleveland’s 3-1 loss to the Tigers. It did not go exceptionally well.  LaPorta, the seventh overall pick in the 2006 draft, was 0-for-4 with two strikeouts against Justin Verlander.  He stranded four runners, leaving the bases loaded in the seventh, and popped out to end the game....

Now Batting For The Atlanta Braves…

Atlanta’s Jordan Schafer, a two-time member of Baseball America’s Top 100 prospects (25 in 2008, 42 in 2009), made his major league debut for the Braves tonight, batting eighth in the team’s season opener against the Philadelphia Phillies. Schafer kicked his career off in style, homering off Brett Myers in his first at-bat.  He is the third Brave to do so (Chuck Tanner and Jermaine Dye are the others). He followed the round-tripper with...
