Prospect A-Z Day 13: Matt Moore

December 2, 2011
By
A to Z

We got back to shortstops yesterday, generally focusing on Tampa Bay’s Hak-Ju Lee. Just a year after being acquired from the Cubs in the Matt Garza trade, he became the team’s best shortstop prospect and best prospect among all position players. His athleticism, solid bat and nice plate approach makes him one of the top shortstop prospects in the game, and the Rays hope he can hit at the top of their lineup soon....

Bus Leagues Road Trip: PNC Park, Part Deux

Just over two months after my first visit to western Pennsylvania with my brother Tim and two friends, I went back to the Keystone State, this time with my wife. Our anniversary was Friday, we both had a three-day weekend for Labor Day, and the free Pirates tickets I won in June were burning a hole in my pocket, so we each took a couple extra days off and planned a trip. She originally...

What’s This – A Contest?

September 7, 2009
By

Well, sort of. My wife and I went on a trip to Pennsylvania this weekend, making stops in Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.  I’ll have much more from the stop in Pittsburgh, including words AND pictures, but for now, let’s just leave it at this: we signed up to spin the prize wheel again and I won free tickets.  Again. (Well, the slip says, “Discounted tickets”, but when I went on the web site to check,...

Sometimes? Redemption is not only three fights away…

I am in a bad spot at fantasy baseball. I am one of the lesser lights of the 30-team 34-man rostered league of legends known only as Lozoball. And as such? The Padres debuting starter had an interest for me today. Now I know starting a story based on Fantasy Baseball is a dark and dangerous path. But as context goes? It’s what got me interested in the Padres starter making his debut. I...

Why Don’t More Teams Hold Minor League Games At Major League Parks?

August 9, 2009
By

I’m not sure how common things like the “Futures at Fenway” and “Road to Wrigley” games are, but they’re the kind of events I would like to see major league teams sponsor more often. What’s not to like? –Players get the chance to ply their trade on a major league field.  For some guys, the prospects, it might be their first opportunity to check out the on-field atmosphere in the big leagues; for the...

The All-Golden Spikes Award Team

July 15, 2009
By

Thirty-two players have won the Golden Spikes Award as the nation’s best amateur player.  As luck would have it, that’s just about enough to put together a full team (thanks to Khalil Greene and Rickie Weeks, the only middle infielders who have won) – lineup, rotation, bullpen, and bench.  They even have a manager. It’s very exciting. Before moving on, feel free to tip your cap to the six guys who didn’t quite make...

The Great Baseball Road Trip – Extra P in your seat.

The Great Baseball Road Trip – Extra P in your seat.

I’m not going to rehash the story Brian has already told so well. I’m just going to add in the photos I took, along with some captions, since I was only there for the Baltimore portion of the trip. Camden as viewed from OMDQ’s seats. The seat I actually paid for would be right in front of the railing all the way to the left. This marks the first time I’ve ever been forcibly...

Tom Gorzelanny and Ian Snell Might Be Too Good For The Minor Leagues

July 1, 2009
By

Times are tough for Pirates pitchers Ian Snell and Tom Gorzelanny.  Both are relatively young (27 and 26, respectively) and have had some major league success, but something – injury, lack of confidence, playing for the Pirates – has derailed once promising careers. Last weekend, Gorzelanny and Snell found themselves pitching on back-to-back days for the Indianapolis Indians.  On Saturday, Gorzelanny went five innings against Toledo, striking out twelve and allowing four hits.  The...

The Weekend Of Junior Felix

July 1, 2009
By

Down 10-1 in the bottom of the seventh tonight, the Baltimore Orioles came back with five-spots in the seventh and eighth innings to beat the Red Sox, 11-10.  Late in the game, a graphic flashed up that it was the first time Boston had led by nine runs and lost since June 4, 1989 against Toronto.  Immediately, I remembered the game, and a quick search of Baseball-Reference.com confirmed my suspicions that the game, and...

In Search of Wade Boggs

In Search of Wade Boggs

Earlier this week, my wife texted me at work to tell me that Wade Boggs was scheduled to make an appearance at the Hannaford Supermarket in Nashua on Friday evening from 5 to 7.  I was a little disappointed because I used to love Wade Boggs – he was the Red Sox best offensive player during my formative years as a fan; in 1988, the first year I remember following baseball, he hit .366...
