Ghost Stadiums – Cocoa Expo Sports Complex, Cocoa, Florida

Before I left for Afghanistan in mid-March, I drove across Florida from my home in Tampa to my parents’ home in Melbourne. Along the way, on Florida State Road 520, just outside of Cocoa, Florida, I saw the remains of what was once the home of the Florida State League’s Cocoa Astros, the spring home of the Houston Astros, and for a season, the spring home of the then-Florida Marlins.  Sadly, even at 55...

Wounded Vets meet the Washington Nationals in Viera

March 13, 2012

By the time you read this I should be on my way to exotic Afghanistan. But I thought this was a great video and I thought it was definitely worth sharing here. Hopefully I'll be able to post periodically during the season, but if not I think this video of wounded veterans working out with the Nationals at their spring complex in Viera, Florida (coincidentally, the town I grew up in) was a great...

As the Rays have grown in prominence in the AL East, their blogosphere has also vastly grown in size and expertise. Only a few years ago, there were but a hand full of Rays blogs. Now there are quite a few covering all aspects of the Rays organization, from the big league club to the low minors. One of these new Rays blogs is Rays Digest.com, edited by John Gregg. Since starting Rays Digest,...

Opening Day of Spring Training at Salt River Fields Stadium

Salt River 2012! 042

Opening day of Spring Training at Salt River Fields Stadium, home of the Arizona Diamondbacks and Colorado Rockies drew a record crowd of 12,528 on Saturday. Because they share the same stadium in Scottsdale, Arizona as part of the Cactus League it was appropriate for the Dbacks and the Rockies to face each other on opening day. For a team that went from having the worst stats in the Cactus League out of Spring...

Korean Baseball in Tucson

February 16, 2012

The previous spring training home of the Arizona Diamondbacks is seeing some baseball life this spring. Two teams from the Korean Professional Baseball league have made Tucson their home for the past month. They are the Changwon NC Dinos and the Hanwha Eagles. I couldn't pass on the opportunity to photograph some baseball after a long winter. I hope the images give a good impression of spring training baseball, with a Korean twist.  ...

Prospect A-Z Day 16: Matt Purke

December 20, 2011
By
A to Z

Outfielder Oscar Taveras was the subject of yesterday's Prospect A-Z. His breakout season helps strengthening a Cardinals farm system that's starting to look much stronger compared to recent seasons. That being said, everyone saw a number of homegrown players chip in contributions to their World Series run, and sometimes it's hard to argue with results. With Albert Pujols signing elsewhere, St. Louis will need to look to its farm system to fill the void,...

Prospect A-Z Day 15: Oscar Taveras

December 19, 2011

A to Z

Yesterday, Prospect A-Z returned with Washington catcher Derek Norris. He has the power and defensive skills to potentially be an All-Star, but he needs to improve his batting average. He'll be competing for true three outcome titles in the majors with his patience and also penchant of striking out. Wilson Ramos established himself as a solid starter behind the plate for Washington, but Norris could eventually surpass him. He could be a key piece...

Prospect A-Z Day 14: Derek Norris

December 12, 2011

A to Z

Prospect A-Z takes a back seat to the book any day, so hopefully no one missed it too much. As a refresher, the last entry was about future Rays ace Matt Moore. After dazzling minor leaguers and prospect watchers from April through August, he was promoted by the Rays to help out in the bullpen, but he eventually worked his way into the rotation and became Tampa Bay's game one starter in the playoffs....

Prospect A-Z Day 9: Jose Iglesias

A to Z

I hope everyone had a nice holiday weekend. The short week wrapped up with Washington lefty Bryan Harper. It was a poor attempt at baseball humor because obviously his brother is the real prospect, not Bryan. Most of the post focused on a couple other things: the Harper brothers' teammates at the College of Southern Nevada in 2010 and other teams that have drafted or acquired brothers of their highly paid draft picks. It's...
