U.S. Olympic Roster Announced

So, the Olympic roster has been announced. There are many familiar Bus League names on the list, but USA Baseball presents them in a very clinical way, as if these were guys they just found on the street with no other attachment to baseball. In fact, a player is one of four things on this roster: infielder, outfielder, catcher, or pitcher. So, I’m going to re-announce the roster with all of the spaces colored...

Dogfight ends in Fresno State Victory

The College World Series ended in Omaha, with the Fresno State Bulldogs pulling off an unlikely championship over Georgia. Congrats to both sets of Bulldogs. Head on over to The College Baseball Blog for a more comprehensive roundup.

Now Batting, for the United States of America…

Usually, OMDQ puts one of these columns up to denote the Major League arrival of one of the Bus League faithful. But Lt. Jonathan Johnston is no ordinary player. A 2006 graduate of the U.S. Naval Academy, Johnston had already spent a year on active duty before the Oakland A’s took a flyer and selected him in the 42nd round of the 2007 first-year player draft. His .317 senior-year batting average for Navy no...

NCAA Baseball Regionals Set

If you yearn for a playoff atmosphere in June, there’s not much for you in MLB or the Bus Leagues. Fortunately, we have college baseball, which starts the season in the frigid months so it can coincide with kids actually being in school instead of on beaches somewhere. Friend of the site Brian Foley has been running the highly successful College Baseball Blog for a couple of years now, and he and his staff...

A Stadium Dilemma in Omaha

A Stadium Dilemma in Omaha

This is one of those deals where you can’t make everyone happy. Omaha, Nebraska is the legendary home of the College World Series. Creaky Rosenblatt Stadium has had numerous face-lifts, but the NCAA has been hinting that they’d like a more high-end home for one of their signature events. In order to hold off other municipalities that would enjoy the reported $40 million in enhanced economic activity that the Series generates, the city has...

A Tale of Two Mat(t)s

A Tale of Two Mat(t)s

You may have noticed that last week I kind of skipped the whole “Spotlight on” series. I realized that doing a link dump every other day was overkill, and also noticed that nobody was clicking on the links. So, instead, I’ll be doing something a little more fun – looking at specific teams and prospects that grab my interest. Today, I’m checking out the Huntsville Stars (Brewers) as suggested by reader Andrew. They have...

Baseball Musings had a link this weekend to the story of San Diego State sophomore pitcher Stephen Strasburg, who turned in a phenomenal performance on Friday night: a complete game one-hit shutout of Utah in which he walked one batter and struck out 23. Yeah, you read that right.  23. Strasburg struck out at least two batters in every inning and at one point recorded thirteen consecutive outs via strikeout.  The only hit he allowed was a...

Finally, the NCAA Tournament and MiLB Come Together

First off, I should probably introduce myself. I’m Sam and Eric and OMDQ have been generous enough to let me join the crew here at the Bus Leagues. I’ll be giving insights on the Eastern Leauge (AA). Considering that March is synonomous with all sports fans to college basketball, I figured that it would be fitting to link that with this site. For the second year in a row, the Trenton Thunder are running...

A Little Links Post to Invigorate the System

For those of you that happen to stumble across this site while it’s still somewhat dormant, don’t worry. We’ll be fully swinging on the Bus Leagues as soon as this pesky NCAA basketball tournament thins out a bit. For now, we’ll at least share some of the links that have been pouring into our in-box this early spring, and sometime over the next couple of weeks we’ll give you a preview of what to...

2008 CWS Format Announced

The NCAA has announced some minor changes to the 2008 College World Series schedule. This year, games will begin on Saturday June 14th. Accordingly, the finals will conclude on June 24th or 25th, depending on how final elimination shakes out. “The Saturday start will allow participating teams an extra day to prepare for the Series, while providing flexibility during the Regional and Super Regional rounds in the event of weather delays,” said Dennis Poppe,...
