Now Pitching, For The Los Angeles Angels…

May 1, 2008
By

The Los Angeles Angels recalled their top prospect, 21-year-old righthander Nick Adenhart, from AAA Salt Lake last night.  Once one of top high school pitching prospects in the nation and now Baseball America’s 24th-rated prospect overall, Adenhart was off to a very good start for the Bees, posting a 4-0 record and 0.87 ERA in five starts.  He takes the place of Dustin Moseley in the rotation and is expected to make his major...

The Z-Meter: 5/1/2008

The Z-meter tracks the story arcs of 25 top prospects (or players we just like) on their way to the bigs. It is named after current Washington Nationals star Ryan Zimmerman, who made the transition from anchoring the University of Virginia to starring in MLB in one year. Promoted: Evan Longoria, 3B, Durham (AAA) to Tampa Bay Rays (MLB) Luke Hochevar, RHP, Omaha (AAA) to Kansas City Royals (MLB) Max Scherzer, RHP, Tucson (AAA)...

Getting DFAed Is Not Fun

The Boston Red Sox designated reliever Bryan Corey for assignment yesterday, the second time they have done so this season.  The Boston Globe’s Gordon Edes had a very good column on Corey today, reminding us that there is still a significant caste system in Major League Baseball: Feel sorry for him? That’s the last thing he would want. A little understanding, maybe, that there’s a huge difference between the big-league life lived by Manny...

Welcome Back, Francisco

April 26, 2008

It’s official: The Cisco Kid, Francisco Liriano, is returning to the Bus Leagues. Liriano was sent to Triple-A Rochester before Friday night’s game at Texas, and it was not a surprise. He gave up six runs and got only two outs on Thursday against Oakland, his latest failure to find the strike zone in a return from reconstructive elbow surgery. “He knew he needed to improve. It wasn’t a shocker to him,” manager Ron Gardenhire...

AAA Spotlight: Rehab Start Edition 4/25/2008

We started this blog right at the end of the season last year, so we didn’t have a lot of posts before we went into hibernation. But one that did attract attention was a post about the new Lehigh Valley Iron Pigs (Phillies), who opened play this season. The nickname alone is noteworthy, but as I perused the roster, I found something even better – it turns out Kris Benson is an Iron Pig....

Spotlight on AAA Ball – 4/17/2008

The International League is celebrating 125 years of baseball this season. The 2008 class of the IL Hall of Fame will be the first to receive a statuette called “Curtain Call”, meant to honor the contributions made by HOF-worthy players. I think it’s kind of cool – like the baseball version of an Oscar. Hey, Look! Jeff Weaver’s back! And he’s going to be a Nashville Sound (Brewers)! I don’t know if you...

The Z-meter tracks the story arcs of 25 top prospects (or players we just like) on their way to the bigs. It is named after current Washington Nationals star Ryan Zimmerman, who made the transition from anchoring the University of Virginia to starring in MLB in one year. Last week, I thought it was cute to call this by the long-ass name of the Zimmerman-o-meter. Now I don’t, so it’s the Z-meter from now...

Now Batting For The Tampa Bay Rays…

April 12, 2008
By

The Tampa Bay Rays made a controversial decision at the end of spring training, sending top prospect Evan Longoria to AAA Durham despite an excellent performance in the Grapefruit League. As various blogs pointed out, the move was likely based not on Longoria’s playing ability, but for financial reasons: keeping him in the minors for even a couple weeks impacted the length of time before he would ultimately be eligible for arbitration, free agency,...

There’s A Lot Of Money In Minor League Baseball

April 12, 2008
By

The North Carolina Division of Tourism, Film and Sport (who even knew there was such a thing?) recently did a study on the economic effects of minor league baseball in the state, and the results are a bit staggering: The Division of Tourism found that more fans in North Carolina attend minor league baseball games than NASCAR events. In turn, they spend about $60 million as a whole. Some $47 million pours in to...
