10 Rules for finding a Good Prospect

I’ll admit it. I’m a bit of a wonk. A futurist wonk. Now granted, there are certain advantages to it. Though the fact I was able to get on the Michael Pineda train before the rest of the world caught up to him is certain to pay dividends by 2012? Some would consider that boring. Those people are Communists. I’m here for the hundreds in attendance and for the two or three in my...

Catching Up On The Mexican League Playoffs

Liga-mexicana-de-beisbol

For whatever reason, we tend to forget that the Mexican League (Liga Mexicana de Beisbol to its friends) exists. The only guess I can muster as to why is because no top prospects hone their talents south of the border, and we tend to love us some prospects around these parts. Whatever the reason, there is one time that we historically show at least a passing interest in the LMB, and that time is...

Comparing Major League and Minor League Attendance: Week 5

May 29, 2010
By
minor league fans

Cleveland hoped to receive an attendance boost last weekend when Cincinnati ventured upstate for the annual matchup between the two teams, but even an in-state rivalry couldn’t fill The Ballpark Formerly Known As Jacobs Field. By Indians standards, however, the three marks from the Reds series (23,028; 25,531; 21,044) were phenomenal. Consider this: the team has surpassed 15,000 in attendance in just two other games all season (out of eighteen home dates), one of...

Saltillo Wins Mexican League Championship

Armed with a three games to two lead in the Mexican League finals, Saltillo put matters to rest early in Game Six, scoring in each of the first six innings and building a 13-0 lead en route to a 14-1 win. Seven of the team’s nine starters had two or more hits and eleven of eighteen safeties went for extra bases.  Quintana Roo sent eight pitchers to the hill, but none was able to...

Mexican League Finals All Tied Up at Two

August 27, 2009
By

After Saltillo took the first two games of the Mexican League finals from Quintana Roo over the weekend, it appeared the Saraperos were in good position to win the team’s first championship since 1980. El Tigres, however, have clawed their way back into it. After an off day on Monday, they’ve taken two in a row to tie the series heading into tonight’s pivotal Game Five. If Saltillo wants to bounce back, they’ll need...

2009 Mexican League Finals – Game Two

August 24, 2009
By

The Saraperos de Saltillo moved another step closer to the team’s first Mexican League title in nearly three decades on Sunday, beating el Tigres de Quintana Roo, 6-3. The bullpen allowed one hit in 2.1 innings and Jesus Cota homered for the second consecutive game as el Saraperos took a two games to none lead in the best-of-seven series.  The team’s last championship was won in 1980.  They finished second in 2004 and 2005....

The Mexican League Finals Are Underway

August 23, 2009

The finals of the Mexican League playoffs got underway last night, with the Saraperos de Saltillo topping the Tigres de Quintana Roo, 7-6. El Tigres led 6-2 after four and a half before el Saraperos scored five in the bottom half. The big hit came off the bat of Jesus Cota, who hit a two-out, three-run homer to put the home team in the lead. El Saraperos have not won the league championship since...

Minor League MVP Candidates, League-By-League

August 11, 2009
By

Just for the heck of it, I decided tonight to look at the stats for every league in the minors and see if I could come up with a candidate or two (no more than three) for the Most Valuable Player award.  (I’ll try to do the same for pitchers later this week.) Some of these are no-brainers (*cough*Chris CarterTexasLeague*cough*), but most had at least a couple guys that should find themselves in the...

We Now Have a Role Model

October 10, 2007
By

OMDQ and I often joke about how we’re going to become famous for our travels in search of minor-league baseball. Apparently, it’s already been done, but it only made one man Lancaster-famous. LANCASTER COUNTY, Pa. – A love of America’s Pastime, a chance to see the country and some downtime after his manufacturing company stopped production were the key factors in guiding Chuck Barrage’s minor-league baseball journey this season. Barrage, of Honey Brook, has...
