Baseball and Pancakes – What More Could a Fan Want?

Any time I read about some intrepid soul venturing out to see as many baseball games as possible, I get a little bit jealous. But when I read about an RV that will be hitting 60+ minor-league ballparks across the United States, and also chowing on pancakes, I just have to write about it. It seems that the International House of Pancakes will be celebrating a 50th anniversary soon. To share the wealth, they’ve...

The Z-Meter: 5/29/2008 – Chasing Headley

The Z-meter tracks the story arcs of 25 top prospects (or players we just like) on their way to the bigs. It is named after current Washington Nationals star Ryan Zimmerman, who made the transition from anchoring the University of Virginia to starring in MLB in one year. Promoted: Evan Longoria, 3B, Durham (AAA) to Tampa Bay Rays (MLB) Luke Hochevar, RHP, Omaha (AAA) to Kansas City Royals (MLB) Max Scherzer, RHP, Tucson (AAA)...

Meet Jay Bruce, Give Him a Nickname, Win a Book

If there’s one thing I know about our readership, it is that you-all are very, very curious about Jay Bruce. As central HQ for Jay Bruce worship on the web, we’ve decided to help you out. This feature will tell you everything we can glean from the vast wine-dark seas of Internetia, so we can all anticipate what the pundits will be talking about when Jay is inevitably called up within the next week or...

Forget Chipper – Who’s Gonna Hit .400 In The Minors?

May 16, 2008
By

With Atlanta’s Chipper Jones making an early run at Major League Baseball’s first .400 batting average in 67 years, I thought it might be fun to look at similar seasons at the minor league level.  The data at Baseball-Reference’s minor league site goes back as far as 1992, a seventeen year span in which there have been ten .400 seasons. Sort of. The thing with these stats is that the minimum number of plate appearances necessary...

Guest Column: From the Bigs to the Buses

Getting to know other writers is one of the best things about having a blog. Since OMDQ and I have been in the writing version of the Bus Leagues for more than a year, we have met some great people we are proud to call friends & colleagues. One of those is Jordi, who writes about baseball, politics, and other blood sports at his site, The Serious Tip. Today, he shares his weekend experiences...

GAC! (Part 2)

May 6, 2008
By

A couple days ago, I noticed that Clinton’s Ian Gac was leading the Midwest League in batting average (still is), homeruns and runs batted in, and wondered out loud if any player has ever won that league’s Triple Crown.  An article on MiLB.com talked about Moe Hill, who was the first to take all three titles in 1974, and another source mentioned Joey Meyer in 1984, but I wasn’t sure if those were correct, or...

Spotlight on A Ball – West Virginia Power vs. Delmarva Shorebirds

Over the weekend, I visited the Delmarva peninsula with my family. It’s called that because it contains parts of Delaware, Maryland, and Virginia. Smack in the middle is a town called Salisbury, and that town is the home of the Delmarva Shorebirds, class A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles. They were taking on the West Virginia Power (Brewers). So I made sure to catch the Sunday afternoon game with my son. Here are a...

GAC!

Extra P put Ian Gac and his nine homeruns on the Z-Meter last week, but the pressure was apparently too much and Gac-Man immediately stopped hitting the ball out of the park.  Until tonight. Gac homered twice and drove in six runs, adding to his league-leading totals in both categories (11 and 32, respectively).  His 32 RBI are second-best in all of minor league baseball, trailing only Jesus Guzman of AA Midland.  The game...
