This week, we will be presenting the 2010 Bus Leagues Postseason Awards in five categories: Independent Pitcher of the Year, Independent Player of the Year, MiLB Reliever of the Year, MiLB Pitcher of the Year, and MiLB Player of the Year. Voters selected their top five finishers for each award, with points awarded on a 5-4-3-2-1 scale. In addition to the regular Bus Leagues cast of characters, we invited a few friends to vote...

Odds and Ends

August 31, 2010

kyle_drabek

I’m heading down to Baltimore tomorrow morning to catch a couple Sox-Orioles games with my aunts (the way the team’s season has gone, I might actually be catching by Wednesday night. See what I did there?) and uncles. There’s a lot of packing (translation: I need to watch my wife pack my bags) and hand wringing (I’ve never navigated an airport or traveled on a plane by myself. If you know me, you know...

Make Sure You Have Your Playoff Procedures In Order, People

August 24, 2010
By
jim mora playoffs

I was all set to make myself a bunch of little note card cheat sheets containing the playoff procedures for Minor League Baseball’s leagues, then I realized how complicated some of these scenarios get. Soooo, change of plans – I’ll just link here to the pages that detail each league’s procedure, and we’ll have this post as an easy reference. AAA International League Mexican League – The Mexican League just instructs visitors to consult...

The Z-Meter 8/11/2010

August 21, 2010
By
baseballcloseup1

The Z-meter is our way of tracking the prospects we like. We keep track of stats for 25 players at a time, compiled from Baseball America, reader votes, and our own irrational sense of whimsy. A couple of the players who made it onto the meter via reader voting ended up starting their seasons in the majors, so Jason Heyward and Jenrry Mejia have the honor of being the first players on our Promotions...

Hey, Anybody Wanna See A Miracle Tomorrow?

Luke Holko

I spent part of the morning today trying to figure out how to write about the goings-on in the Golden Baseball League this season, from the appearances of players Eri Yoshida (the Knuckle Princess) and Mark Prior to the folding of the St. George Road Runners to the hateful anti-gay tirade of Edmonton Capitals manager Brent Bowers. Then I remembered Luke Holko, and decided to write about him instead. I’ve written about Luke many...

Minor League ball featured in The Norman Einsteins

August 2, 2010
By
spires_cianoday

Friend of the site Cian O’Day puts out an online magazine called The Norman Einsteins. He and his staff of writers put together thoughtful essays about sports and life. They also do photoessays in each issue, and this one is about minor league baseball in New York, specifically the Brooklyn Cyclones vs. the Long Island Yankees, which is a big NY-Penn League rivalry. Cian used a quote from our own Brooklynite Will Georgantas in...

10 Rules for finding a Good Prospect

August 1, 2010
By
esx snead

I’ll admit it. I’m a bit of a wonk. A futurist wonk. Now granted, there are certain advantages to it. Though the fact I was able to get on the Michael Pineda train before the rest of the world caught up to him is certain to pay dividends by 2012? Some would consider that boring. Those people are Communists. I’m here for the hundreds in attendance and for the two or three in my...

short a: If you love the Everett Aquasox so much, why don’t you just marry them?

I do love the Aquasox. I know I write about them more than any other team. I also find it absurd that I love a team so much even though I’ve never been to their ballpark, and live thousands of miles away from ever getting that opportunity. And yet, these guys are promotional geniuses. They already have the cool-ass frog logo, some throwback logos that make references to their Mariners affiliation, and now they...

Best AVG: Ryan Scoma, RF, Salem-Kiezer Volcanoes. Ryan is hitting .400 in the Northwest League. I have to say, even if he keeps that up for a short season, I think it’s pretty impressive. Best results, NWL division: Cory Martin, RHP, Boise Hawks. Cory has pitched in eight games as a reliever for Boise. He’s saved seven. It’s not like he blew a save in the July 5th game, either. It just wasn’t a save...

short a: Meet the New York – Penn League

June 18, 2010

nypenn_lg

Short-season A Ball is part of my bailiwick here (I love saying bailiwick… even typing it is somewhat satisfying). That means the New York-Penn League, which has a certain connotation of prison-yard toughness about it when I picture it in my head, and the Northwest League, where closers pitch barefoot and every third game is rained out. Again, in my head. Since my fantasies are patently ridiculous, let’s look at some factual information about the sprawling...
