You Say Goodbye, I Say Hello

I’ve learned a lot about minor league baseball this season, but the most interesting might be something I just discovered about ten minutes ago: major league teams and their minor league affiliates are like the characters on Friends* – sooner or later, they all end up dating one another. *Yeah, Friends.  My pop culture references are so timely.  The backup example was Beverly Hills 90210. Almost immediately after the season ended, what I’m assuming...

BobbleElections have begun, Hudson Valley has spoken

August 7, 2008

The Hudson Valley Renegades were the first team to hold the Goldklang group’s 2nd ever bobbleElection and the results are in…750 for Obama, 713 for McCain.  Fans 18 and over like myself were given tickets upon entry to redeem at “voting booths” by the right field picnic area at Dutchess Stadium.  Obama claimed victory at approximately 7:40 pm after wich the remaining McCains were distributed to those who still had the raffle style tickets...

Designated Bus Leagues lensman Will is making good on his promise to visit all of the minor league parks in his area this summer, and we are all beneficiaries. I did the same thing last year in my locality of Virginia, so I know how fun this can be. This past weekend, Will took in a little New York-Penn League action, visiting the Hudson Valley Renegades (Rays). Here, Dutchess Stadium plays host to the...

Ballpark Wish List: The Brooklyn Cyclones

Ballpark Wish List: The Brooklyn Cyclones

For some reason I cannot adequately explain, I really want to go see a minor-league game at Coney Island. The Brooklyn Cyclones have been there since 2000, playing in the short-season New York-Penn League, and eventually sending their best players up the ladder to the Mets. I guess the combination of amusement park, Nathan’s hot dogs, and baseball sounds good to me, even though I must admit that I’ve never been to New York,...

Two Pitching Arms Are Better Than One

June 21, 2008

When I was a kid, the Red Sox had a pitcher named Greg Harris. Harris came to Boston in his mid-30s after being claimed off waivers and spent six seasons with the team, pitching mostly out of the bullpen. In 1992-93, he appeared in 150 games (148 in relief) for Sox teams that finished 73-89 and 80-82, respectively. Harris’ claim to fame, aside from being a decent jack-of-all-trades, was his ability to pitch with...

Two Roads Diverged

Two Roads Diverged

On a shelf in my parents’ living room, there is a baseball signed by every attendee of the 2004 New Hampshire Baseball Dinner. Some of the names are starting to fade, but most are still clearly visible. Jim Rice. Johnny Pesky. Rick Wise. Butch Hobson. Bill Monbouquette. It’s one of those items that is pretty cool to have, even if the actual monetary value is probably nonexistent. In addition to some of the big...

Spotlight on A Ball – 3/31/2008

With 300+ minor league teams in these United States, OMDQ and I will need some way to focus our energies, and this is one way we figured to do it. Monday is “A” ball day. That will include Rookie League and every form of A ball. Wednesday we’ll check out the AA clubs, and then on Friday on up to AAA. We’ll also develop a few weekly features to slot in on the other...

What If Jose’s Girlfriend Puts A Curse On His Glove?

March 3, 2008

From CantonRep.com: Baseball will experiment with three other rules during the short-season Single-A New York-Penn and Northwest leagues this summer. When the pitcher receives the ball, he will have 15 seconds, rather than 12, to deliver the pitch. The fourth trip to the mound by a manager or coach will result in the pitcher automatically being pulled from the game. Also, only one infielder at a time will be allowed to visit the mound....

Today we’ve been set up with a handful of photos via our good friend in blogging, MCBias. If you like your writing to approach the status quo with a healthy dose of skepticism, MC is your man. He has definite ideas about how blogging should grow, and how it should be conducted from an ethical standpoint. His most recent interview is a two-parter with WNBA star Erin Beuscher. If that’s up your alley, check...
