Jamie McOwen Extends Hitting Streak To 42 Games, Teammate Alex Liddi On Pace For Triple Crown

July 6, 2009
By

Jamie McOwen extended his hitting streak to 42 games today with an RBI single in the fifth inning of an 8-0 win over Visalia.  He is hitting .352 for the season and .500 over his last ten games. As good as McOwen has been, his teammate, third baseman Alex Liddi, has been even better.  Liddi currently leads the California League in runs, hit, doubles, homeruns, runs batted in, batting average, slugging percentage, total bases,...

McOwen Extends Hit Streak To 41 Games

July 5, 2009

After waiting until the last possible moment – ninth inning, two outs, two strikes – to extend his hitting streak to forty games last night, High Desert Mavericks outfielder Jamie McOwen allowed for no such drama today, running the streak to forty-one with a single in his first at-bat against Visalia’s Trevor Harden.  According to Wikipedia, he has the 14th longest hitting streak in minor league history; Joe Wilhoit’s record of 69 straight has...

Minor League Games Available On The Radio? Brilliant!

July 4, 2009
By

I stumbled onto a fascinating discovery tonight: MiLB.com provides links to free audio feeds from around minor league baseball.  Fans can listen to games for nearly 125 teams over the Internet. I took advantage of this find to tune in to the High Desert-Rancho Cucamonga California League matchup.  High Desert outfielder Jamie McOwen was trying to extend his hitting streak to forty games.  He was 0-for-2 with a sacrifice and a walk when I...

Wednesday Was A Good Day

July 4, 2009

Bakersfield Blaze righthander Ryan Tatusko pitched the game of his life on Wednesday, allowing just a ninth inning single in a 2-0 win over Modesto. Lots of pitchers put up great performances, at all levels. But how many of them end up writing about it afterward? Tatusko is writing regularly this season for The Newberg Report. After Wednesday’s game, he used that space to take the readers into the mind of a guy on...

Tom Drees Sees Your No-Hitter, And He Raises You

July 2, 2009
By

While writing last night’s post about Brandon Hynick’s perfect game, I stumbled across a list of every no-hitter in Pacific Coast League history.  This morning, I double-checked where the list had come from, and my hazy, wee-hours-of-the-morning recollection proved right on: it was linked under one of the stats tabs on the PCL’s home page. The wheels started turning: if the PCL had such a list, wasn’t it possible that other leagues did as...

This Week in Bobbleheads – Week 6

May 11, 2009
By

What a week this has been!  Alex Rodriguez has a dramatic return from his injury with a first pitch homer on 5/8/09 and Manny Ramirez shows his feminine side by being the latest superstar to test positive for PEDs.  Still though, bobblehead promos are front and center on my end of this blog.  Here’s the lineup this week: San Francisco Giants 5/12/09 Lou Seal (Chinese) (Mascot) – Part of a Chinese Heritage Night Promotion. ...

Baseball fever is officially in regular season mode.  2 new venues have debuted for MLB here in NY, minor league reports are starting to mount and promotional schedules continue to mount.  Here’s this week’s report on the still prosperous hobby: Chicago Cubs 4/21/09 Carlos Zambrano “No-Hitter” Statue – First 10,000 fans – Z’s feat is especially amazing considering this was to be a “road game” in a neutral site due to a hurricane in...

Diamondbacks Getting Naughty

I thought about making this entry the second in my “I’m an observant fellow” series, since I seem to occasionally miss important developments. However, this time, I think it was an issue of timing rather than oversight. Allow me to explain. Every season, I update the list of affiliates for each MLB team on our MiLB Teams page. Generally, I head over to each team’s page, where they have a list of affiliates. Seems...

Now that opening day has come and gone, the smell of baseball is firmly entrenched in our senses and the promotions will start to pile up.  As the schedules get busier, so will I in reporting all there is to know about the hobby of bobbleheads week by week.  Ok here we go: Detroit Tigers 4/13/09 Miguel Cabrera – First 10,000 fans – The AL HR champ in 2008 will add to his laurels...

The Z-Meter: 4/7/2009 – Hope Springs Anew

The Z-meter tracks the story arcs of 25 top prospects (or players we just like) on their way to the bigs. It is named after current Washington Nationals star Ryan Zimmerman, who made the transition from anchoring the University of Virginia to starring in MLB in one year. Promoted: None Nobody has accumulated stats yet, so this first edition of ’09 will just introduce you to the players and give you some idea of...
