That’s A Terrible Throw, Even For A Dinosaur

I went to Benjamin Hill’s blog tonight to read about a homeless man who wandered onto the field in Altoona and ended up watching this video of a dinosaur throwing out the first pitch in Memphis: My kid was asleep by the time I stumbled onto it. I can’t wait to show him tomorrow, just to see how long it keeps him entertained. The over/under is currently set at 45 minutes. The kid loves...

More Proof That Baseball Is A Business

Orioles Red Sox Baseball

This isn’t really minor league related, but I thought it warranted mentioning. The Boston Red Sox designated Scott Schoeneweis for assignment today. It’s hard to argue that he didn’t deserve it – his numbers were pretty brutal (13.2 innings, 19 hits, 10 walks, 13 strikeouts, 2.122 WHIP, 7.90 ERA). But the timing of the move strikes a nerve. In his comments after the game, Schoeneweis noted that while he understood that it was a...

Day Three! We’re going streaking! If you’ve got links we should see, send them my way: onemoredyingquail@gmail.com. The Midwest League All-Star Game will be held in Fort Wayne next month (Baseball in Fort Wayne) Should Roy Halladay have thrown 132 pitches last night? (Philliesflow) I call people by the wrong name all the time; it always makes me feel really, really dumb (The Official Blog of Matt Antonelli) Randy Ruiz hit 35 homers between...

New Hampshire Fisher Cats vs. Portland Sea Dogs: May 15, 2010

One of the quirkier aspects of my personality, and one that often comes through in my choice of writing topics, is my fascination with mediocrity. Eric says I excel at finding the sublime in the below-average, and it’s true. I mean, who else would cover the Great West Conference for fun, or do extensive research on the players picked last in the MLB draft? Yet for some reason, when it comes to minor league...

Links of the Day: The Drew Storen Edition

After something like twelve different attempts at link posts in the past two years, you’d think I would’ve learned my lesson. Naaaah. People are simply doing too much good writing to ignore. Will I not ignore it daily? We’ll just have to see about that. Washington called up Drew Storen over the weekend (Baseball Daily Digest, Ghost of Moonlight Graham) If he sticks in Washington and doesn’t get sent back down, Storen could garner...

Scenes From A Flying Squirrels Game

Flying Squirrels logo

John Murden, a fan and photographer from Richmond, Virginia, was in attendance at Friday night’s game between the Flying Squirrels and the Altoona Curve. Rain delayed the contest for about ninety minutes at one point, and John got a great shot of the night sky over the stadium just before the umpires gave the word: That’s the picture John passed along to us from the Flying Squirrels set on his Flickr page, and it’s...

Comparing Major League and Minor League Attendance: Week 3

May 15, 2010
By
minor league fans

After gaining ground last week in the attendance battle with its affiliates, Cleveland faded back again this week and now trails by nearly 60,000 fans. Every week I feel the urge to point out that the Indians can’t keep trailing like this, that they’ve only played fourteen home games, that things will start to work out, blah blah blah. The fact is, the major league team draws terribly and the Triple-A team draws extremely...

Double-A Review: Race To Twenty

May 15, 2010
By

I was looking at some of the league leaders around the minors today and noticed that six weeks into the season, several pitchers already have at least six wins. Of course, that go me wondering: who was the last minor league pitcher to win twenty games in a season? In recent years, most guys get stuck around 17 or 18 wins and 21 to 24 decisions, which leaves a very slim margin for error...

Q&A: Blue Jays Prospect Kyle Drabek

May 13, 2010
By
wpid-drabek2

Kyle Drabek, one of the top pitching prospects in baseball, was traded to the Toronto Blue Jays during the offseason. He started the season with Double-A New Hampshire, where he is 4-3 with a 3.60 ERA and 41 strikeouts in 40 innings. We sat down after batting practice last week to talk about his father, the psychology of being traded, and the right way to act on the mound. Your dad ...
