Pensacola celebrating spam for some reason: At Wednesday night’s game against Mississippi, the Blue Wahoos honored the 75th anniversary of spam. They were also peppering Twitter with spam facts throughout the day. I honestly have no idea what connection the food product has with Pensacola, but kudos for the interesting promotion regardless. No word when they’ll be celebrating the anniversary of spam email and saving Nigerian princes and their fortunes.
Rosenbaum throws non-quality start: Harrisburg starter Daniel Rosenbaum really isn’t a prospect, but that’s surely not stopping him from having a great season. With just a 0.99 ERA and 0.82 WHIP through nine starts, he’s been one of the best starters in baseball this year. Although Harrisburg won the game and Rosenbaum improved to 6-0 on the year, it was the first time this season he didn’t throw a quality start. He couldn’t complete the 6th inning even though he was only charged with three runs. It was only the second time this season he’s allowed more than one run in a start, and he walked a season high three batters.
Bundy promoted: Keith Law believes Dylan Bundy could’ve started this season in AA and done just fine, and yesterday the Orioles got him one step closer to Bowie by promoting him to Frederick. The Orioles have been taking baby steps with Bundy, only allowing him to throw five innings in each of his last two starts. His performance with Delmarva has been the most impressive of anyone this season, allowing no earned runs in 30 innings and striking out 40 while yielding only five hits and two walks. It seems likely that he’ll be challenged a bit more in the Carolina League.
Baez going to Peoria: Phil Rogers reports that Javier Baez, the Cubs’ top 10 pick last year, will soon be promoted to low-A Peoria to truly embark on his pro career. He played in only five games last season after signing, and he’s been in extended spring training the entire season to date. Bus Leagues’ #66 prospect, Baez is known for great bat speed and power potential. He’ll play shortstop for now, but he’ll likely be a third baseman down the road.
Meyer has career best outing: He’s only nine starts into his career so maybe this isn’t that notable, but it’s a nice feather in his cap in an up and down season thus far. Alex Meyer had some of the best stuff in last year’s draft, and the Nationals made a big bet that they could iron out his mechanics and command. He’s showed a lot of flashes so far this year but not much consistency. Wednesday, he had a tremendous start, striking out eight in five innings and only allowing a run on one hit and two walks. It tied a season high in K’s, and the one hit was a nice change of pace after allowing 15 hits over 11 innings in his previous two starts.
Four base error committed: This really isn’t significant at all, but it was funny to me when I saw Daytona mention it on Twitter. Starter Frank Del Valle made an errant throw to first on a ball hit by Alonzo Harris. It was believed that the ball went in the tarp down the line, but neither umpire ever called a dead ball. Harris raced around the bases and came around to score for the faux-inside the park home run. In the same game, shortstop Arismendy Alcantara committed his 20th of the season.
