I spent part of the morning today trying to figure out how to write about the goings-on in the Golden Baseball League this season, from the appearances of players Eri Yoshida (the Knuckle Princess) and Mark Prior to the folding of the St. George Road Runners to the hateful anti-gay tirade of Edmonton Capitals manager Brent Bowers.
Then I remembered Luke Holko, and decided to write about him instead.
I’ve written about Luke many times before, of course. His accident last September proved that something good could actually come out of an awful situation. The way people rallied around the Holkos and supported them through the toughest times they’ve ever known was inspiring to see.
Tomorrow, Luke (who turned five in July) will take another step in his comeback when he takes the mound at Eastwood Field in Niles, OH, to throw out the first pitch prior to the Scrappers game against the Aberdeen IronBirds. Last Monday, he was the guest of honor at a press conference where the team announced that he had been signed as an honorary member of the team.
A five-year-old kid who not only survived being hit in the head by a line drive, but has recovered both mentally and physically to the point that he can return to the place where he was injured, go on the field, and throw out the first pitch?
Yeah, I believe in miracles.
