Sad fact: I grew up a fan of the Kansas City Royals.
At the time, it was actually awesome. George Brett in powder blue-type awesome. But the past 20 years or so have really sucked. But I’m a real fan, so I’ve sucked it up and carried on. It’s not like I have any choice – it’s in my DNA to love those knuckleheads.
So I keep track of KC prospects and probably give them way too much credit on the Z-meter (not to mention on my fantasy teams). I’ve had Mike Moustakas on the meter since he was a rookie, and it’s finally paying off.
The kid sat out the first couple of weeks of the season with an injury, and the scuttlebutt was that he’d start the season at the AA level. I expected a weak start, but I’ve never been happier to be wrong in my life. Moose exploded on the scene in his first game against the Arkansas Travelers (yes, for some reason, the state of Arkansas has two double-A franchises in the Texas League), hitting third and making the most of it. Here’s the line from the game:
3/4, .750 AVG, 2 HR, 4 RBI, 4 R, 3.300 OPS
Zowie, kid! When you get to The Show, park one on the interstate for me. In return, I’ll write your name in red on the Z-meter.
Deal?
